Dear Quintero Family,
I just wanted to say that it was with a very heavy heart that I learned, while visiting my family unit for the Thanksgiving vacation, that the Acapulco restaurant had closed.
I was born in Oakland in the late 70s and as far back as I can call up, my family would dine at the Acapulco.
We had a tradition that on our birthdays, we could choose what, or where, we wanted to eat.  I can't tell you how many times we repeatedly chose the Acapulco, and every fourth dimension we went in that location, whether it was a celebration or not, it felt like a special occasion.  Everyone in my family had a different favorite carte du jour particular that nosotros craved.  For me it was always a beef taco combo plate, and every bit I grew up and could eat a little more, I added a tamale to that order. For my sis, it was always a chile relleno.  My mom always wondered what the underground to your rice was.  We all agreed it was ane-of-a-kind -- not soggy, the grain never carve up, it was non clumpy, and had the perfect blend of seasonings.
I can't remember the showtime time I ate at that place, merely I remember then many details almost the identify, so many images that were recorded in my memory at dissimilar ages:  the colored calorie-free that filtered through the stained glass well-nigh the front end door, waiting for a table on the black leather benches near the bar where patrons perched on stools sipping margaritas, the paintings of the family unit that hung near the entrance, the warm tortillas that arrived at the tabular array in a blood-red plastic container, the rope barrier that would exist parted magically for usa past the hostess when our tabular array was ready, and the candy sucker she would give me on the fashion out (and which I would eat in the automobile on the mode home).
I took my commencement girlfriend to swallow at Acapulco, giving her a ride in my offset car.  I prefaced the date by telling her that she was going to eat "the best Mexican food in the world," impressing her with my conviction and good gustatory modality.
When my eyes got bigger than my tummy, which happened every time I looked at the menu, I could wait forward to taking that distinctive foil-wrapped cardboard tray home.  Nothing would get me out of bed on a Saturday like the thought of Acapulco beans and rice, saturated with chile colorado, warmed in the oven and mixed with my forenoon egg.
I've been living in Los Angeles at present for 16 years, a fact that's sometimes difficult to cover, since I always considered myself a Bay Expanse guy.  LA is a urban center that has no shortage of Mexican food, and prides itself on beingness a food-lover's paradise.  But oddly, in all my fourth dimension here, I've never institute a restaurant to rival the Acapulco.  There are fancy restaurants, funky restaurants, street vendors, stands and food trucks.  Some of them practise a practiced taco, a nice soup, a strong margarita, or a hearty ropa vieja, only rarely can a restaurant deliver the "whole enchilada" the way Acapulco's menu did, all while providing the familial space for the neighborhood to come together and relish a hearty meal together.
I don't know when the eating house closed downward, and I don't know the reason.  I cannot imagine it could have slipped in popularity, although I do wonder if the ailing economy played a role.  It saddens me to think of the restaurant as a casualty of this general economic malaise.  But, driving by the dark building a few nights later on Thanksgiving, seeing the normally crowded parking lot empty, I was saddened regardless of reason.  Acapulco was truly an establishment in my life, and something I counted on revisiting for years to come up.  All I can say is cheers for the memories and you will be missed.
